The Annual St. Patrick's Day Roast on Friday was as funny as ever. I've only been to a few, but for the first time in my memory a roaster performed his shtick in costume. Closing out the afternoon, Selectmen Chairman Carmen DelloIacono came out dressed as a fat leprechaun.
After State Rep Paul McMurtry gave his first ever roast, in which he gave a couple of good humored jabs to the retiring Mrs. Kehoe, he had a large bouquet of green flowers and clovers to present to her. Since she wasn't in attendance Paul presented them to Assistant Town Administrator Nancy Baker instead. When Nancy got the biggest round of applause for the day - for doing nothing more than accepting flowers on someone else's behalf - somebody called out and told Bill Keegan he had better look out.
Last night Carmen, Nancy and Paul all attended the Knights of Columbus luau with two of the men who want to join Carmen on the Board. Both Paul Reynolds and Russ Poole were very good sports when they were called upon to take part in the tacky tourist relay race. They each had to put flippers on their hands, and then have their partners help them don floral dresses, masks and snorkels. They then had to pick up their beach towels and noodles, and run a course around the hall that included crawling under the limbo bar set in the middle of the room.
When they got back to the starting line they had to help their partners put on an aloha shirt and men's bathing suits. The ladies then picked up their beach gear and had to run or crawl the same course.
Candidate for the Board of Health Liza DelloIacono was paired up with Russ, and since her opponent, Leanne Jasset, couldn't be found when MC Andy Lawlor was picking victims, Pat Sampson jumped in to team up with Paul.
For winning the race Russ Poole won an award I'm sure he will get a lot of use out of - a Sarah MacDonald for Selectman poster.
There were a number of other games that night, including a hula hoop contest in which Paul "Swivel Hips" Celata was finally beaten. The hula hoops were also used when a team of six hand holding contestants stepped through the hoop and passed it down the line without breaking the link. There was also a limbo, and things got a little slippery when buckets of water were passed over the heads of players and into large tubs with rubber duckies in them. All the winners took home Hawaiian prizes and a good time was had by all.
